Is there any reason the OSX86 project doesn't try to improve on OS X and just end up creating barely functional port for non-apple hardware?

An open-source darwin OS with all of apple's best features would probably be some kind of game-changer

You make a good point and even for people who care about video games there is more support for games on OS X than on Linux.

Like, all of the Blizzard games are supported on OS X and there is even an official League of Legends for OS X. People really don't think about it, but OSX86 is a really good alternative to Windows in a time when people are getting really sick and tired of Microsoft's bullshit.

not really no, osx has always had anemic 3rd party support.

neither BSD nor Linux have managed to change the game

heck the only reason linux still regains any popularity is because Google was willing to waste billions on patent settlements.

the problem is that OSX86 kind of sucks, Even compared to most linux distros it's undersupported. you actually have to choose your hardware to fit support rather than relying on it to just be there.

Like HFS+ and all their layers upon layers of spaghetti emulation code to make their frankenturd GUI communicate with their Mach/BSD abomination?

Just use actual BSD with a kernel that isn't a decade old, or any linux.

SteamOS has a better chance of being a game changer than this.

The only interesting thing that can come from projects like PureDarwin/GNUstep is runtime support for GNU/Linux.
There was the "Darling" project a while go that tried to get OSX binaries to run on GNU/Linux, but I have no idea what happened to them.

there's a good reason OSX is in the top 2. The OS is incredibly easy to use compared Linux or even windows, the UI is sleek as hell.. Love it or hate it, it has huge benefits and huge issues side-by side. There is a huge portion of the population who want to run OSX but can't afford to, and now that windows has become the kind of OS that would make George Orwell weep bitter tears there is more demand than ever

I used them as a designer for 3 years before changing over to IT since I was doing so much of that for the company anyway.

OSX is objectively shit. The company is slowly moving away from Macs since Apple abandoned pro users anyway and is split about 30/70 Mac/PC now and I still get more OSX hangs, crashes, and pinwheels of death than problems with the PCs.

I haven't really used windows since windows xp, and while It was ugly as sin and slow as hell (forgivable given the computers they ran on), it didn't crash much

Linux I've tried several times in the past year alone and every time it was a nightmare. there were so many features that just didn't work right and that was if it worked after installation at all, which at least 4 distros I tried didn't.

There is one oddball who likes to fuck around with Ubuntu, but only as a second workstation alongside his regular machine. That machine is the easiest to maintain since he does it himself after we decided to give him a limited admin account since he knows what he's doing.
