Have you ever written in crazy abstract script/markup languages like Javascript and CSS3, that just seem to write themselves and have everything built in? Yeah, this clusterfuck is what they had to do in order to get all of that fairy dust onto people's screens. I don't know many modern browsers with full CSS3/HTML5 that aren't fuckhuge.

these days a web browser is pretty much the most complicated bit of software running on your computer. they need to do fuck loads. it isnt just a simple html rendering engine anymore. they do audio, video, they have JIT and AOT compilers for JS. They need to be secure but also as close to real time performing as possible. They need hardware acceleration and all kinds of shit.

whereas a kernel hasnt changed a whole lot in what they have to do in a long time. yes they are more complicated than 2 years ago but not massively. most of the kernel LOC are drivers and what not these days. the actual minimal kernel is pretty small.

I'm also in a class like that, which is why I'm now fully aware of how hilarious HTML/JS is. I made a page for no assignment or reason that just throws the word "PISS" all over a giant canvas at random points. It's slow as balls, but it's easier than when I tried applying my C/C++ schema to graphics.

Making a web browser isn't easy.

Making a secure web browser that is constantly updated to address new security threats is hard.

Making a secure web browser that is constantly updated to address new security threats AND allows its users to create customized add-ons (and still remain secure) is really hard.

Doing all of the above, and not being crap, AND being free (FLOSS, no built in ads, no deals with search engines to use their page, no data collection for money)? That is *impossible*.

It doesn't even come close to competing with major browsers. It is probably good enough for powers users who are pissed off at FF. But even with the crackhead decision making of Mozilla, FF is better that any "free"/FLOSS alternative out there in terms of security and functionality.
