usually I’ll record the class if I am allowed, if not I will write on a piece of paper.

If I have to take notes on my laptop I will use Kile text editor, that way I can use mathematical/scientific symbols.

Seconded. One note is GOAT, especially on my surface. Before the lecture starts, I import the PowerPoint then just write directly next to the slides.

Pages on OSX is actually pretty decent. The note template does most of the formatting already.

As for Windows, Onenote is pretty good.

pen and paper when I was in school, but I'd go back to it later and convert it it either to text files if the notes were text heavy, or to a journal by hand if it was diagram/figure/table heavy

If there's anyone who uses org-mode still watching this thread, is there a way to type in formatted equations? As a budding emacs fan I'm interested in using it to take notes, but my notes tend to be extremely math-heavy and I need some kind of pretty-printing if I'm taking digital notes.
