The failure of the first proved there was no point in it.

The servers cost money, so unless you're willing to foot the bill on hosting at least twelve terabytes of storage space it'll fail just like the first.
You could always ask for donations, but the first one tried that and got bashed for "jewery" by the userbase, who complained incessantly when the site went down shortly after.

Not to mention all of the legal issues you'd get into for much of the shit being hosted.

To be honest, you might as well throw money into a hole rather than host a pomf clone.

Most Pomf clones are community services. I would argue it's not their intention to make a profit of it, but to help others. If this goes against your ideals, well, I don't know. It's a bit like charity.

Which legal issues are you talking about specifically? In most countries, service providers have limited liability for user generated content. As long as abuse issues are handled timely, there's no liability on the Pomf clone maintainer.

Regarding legal trouble, I'm making a request for comments on logging policies on Pantsu.cat. Currently, there's no logs as far as ewhal@ is to be believed.

Having no logs could be a moral and legal problem. No logs at all creates friction with enforcement and lawyers. I don't think it's Eliot's intention to advertise no logs and attract more people who may break the law to the service, and then find that Pantsu.cat doesn't have the data and they don't get caught.

With a very short logging policy, the law enforcement could be helped in emergencies such as where the law enforcement is trying to find a kidnapper who uploaded a file with a demand on Pantsu.cat yesterday. This could save human lives.

With respect for privacy, I am suggesting a short 3-14 days logging policy at Pantsu.cat. After this period, the logs containing IP-addresses are deleted. Log rotation would happen daily. You should be using Tor, by the way.

I also welcome other clones to consider and voice opinions on this, but remember this is only an RFC not a consensus.

I run a small pomf clone for a forum that I'm apart of. I only pay $6/month which is nothing and have 250gb of storage space
