He doesn't even now how to run a valid TAR command. I'm someone who uses Windows exclusively on my PCs and encounters Linux occasionally on servers at work and even I'm not that stupid.

You mean that 100,000^4 isn't bigger than 80^10?
(10 letter (80 possible letters) long passwords are more insecure than a 4 word long password, assuming words are randomly chosen from a 100,000 large dictionary.
You see, dictionary attacks only work if the dictionary required is very small.
Using 4 uncommon words together means that the dictionary required is very large.
Use very technical terms from different fields and the dictionary explodes.

Or just add another word.

As someone who's been using Linux as a daily drive for years - I don't know either. I've always used an alias that automatically applies the command based on archive type, and another one to create an archive (was it -pczf?). If I was asked to use tar off the bat to extract a tar archive with a few conditions given (not your usual -xzvf) then I'd struggle as fuck. Would probably have to resort to reading a manpage and thus wouldn't have made it within 10 seconds timeframe.

I pretty much do the same as what's happening in the comic. I can't be bothered to learn something when I will almost always have the web available to diagnose problems. If I do the same procedure enough, it is learned automatically (e.g programming).

I think you're actually correct on this one. I generally deal with TAR files, not tar.gz. (I actually tend to deal with SAR files, which is unpacked by SAPCAR, but the syntax is the same - SAPCAR -xvf file.sar. Why in god's name SAP had to come up with the SAR and CAR formats, I don't know).

Or just add another word to your passphrase, which will add far more security and be easier to memorize than adding another language. Diceware gives you mathematical guarantees on how much entropy you have. The whole point is that you don't need to do anything complicated. XKCD's passphrase example is based on the same idea but he neglected to emphasize that "random" really does mean random, and people misunderstand it because they think you can pick random words by intuition.

I liked beer, and black coffee, and dark chocolate, the first time I tried them. I bought nail biting deterant stuff (extra bitter substance you put on your nails) and I'd eat it for fun. It still worked and I no longer bite my nails, but only because it worked as a reminder, not because it tasted excessively bad.

This isn't what he's saying. My interpretation of it is that the person in the comic without hair (the one who says "do you think maybe we should just admit...") is a joking character. We laugh at him, not with him. That's part of what makes it funny - the fact that it seems "autistic".

What's funny is that there are people who got butthurt about this comic. Web search "randal munroe beer".

True, but if your attacker knew you used Diceware, he would of course try arrangements of the Diceware words. However, if the attacker does not know you used two dictionaries (not just the English Diceware one), then wouldn't that be some added security? Of course you still need long passwords.

Dictionary real life dictionary attacks don't use a dictionary anywhere near 100.000 words and they're still pretty good at cracking passwords set up like Adam suggests.

You're completely missing the point of Diceware (and the XKCD version). It doesn't matter if the attacker knows your word list, you still have at least as many bits of entropy as you calculated. Your "added security" is added complication, and the more complication the more chance there is to fuck up. Just decide how much entropy you need and use the correct number of random words.

Innumerate people shouldn't talk about cryptography. The XKCD comic outright tells you how many bits of entropy it guarantees (assuming you followed the instructions exactly, which most people don't, and which is why Diceware is better because it's near impossible to fuck up following those instructions). The XKCD wordlist is 2048 words long, and 4 random words from it gives you 44 bits of entropy. Want more? Add more words. Simple.

Yes, but probably not enough to be worth the extra complexity.

Assuming XKCD's method (4 words from a list of 2048), doubling the word list gains you 4 bits of entropy. Increasing the phrase to 5 words gains you 11 bits of entropy. The extra word gives you 2^(11-4) = 128 times more security.

Actually the reason it would be sweet is they would add too much honey, so the yeast would have plenty of sugar but not enough nutrient to sustain itself, so fermentation would stop long before all the sugar was consumed

Alcohol tolerance is not relevant to normal strength beers. Incomplete attentuation is caused by long chain sugars that the yeast can't ferment but that still taste sweet, and by the yeast flocculating out before it has fermented all it can. That is precisely how I use git. Even the alt-text is exactly true. I was never good at understanding unintuitive things that I didn't come up with myself. If I really need to use it often, I eventually get it, but I use git very rarely. Randall is not a developer either, so I guess not completely getting git doesn't exactly make him a retard. I never understood the tar one. tar follows gnu practices pretty well, biggest pain is remembering to list the tar file first and contents second, but that makes sense in simple sort of way. Also just remember x for eXtract and c for Create, and always include vz if you want compression/info.
