Instead have the router in your office and then have the devices in the bedroom be wireless.

Cutting through drywall and snaking cables down 20 feet isn't worth the gain in speed. I'm already at 30 mbps, the last time I had to wait for a download to finish was when I was downloading The Phantom Pain.

Would using a secondary router as a repeater and wiring that to the desktop produce a gain in speed?

The wireless adapter on the desktop is the weakest link as of right now though. Laptop gets 40 when wired into the router. Unless the sheer signal loss from 20 feet of house is the weaker link?

Yep, works great at my house.
It's possible it might suck ass at your house but I'm pretty sure my house is wired really poorly (weird switches that don't do anything all over the place, switches that control 2 things for some reason, etc) and it still works great
