If you REALLY need a shortened card, you can shorten it with a hacksaw. So long all you cut off is part of the plastic case or part of the metal heatsink fins the card will still work.
cooling performance may be affected if you start trimming the heatsink, but if you don't cut any heatpipes you'll not do any major cooling reduction.
Oh and don't cut the PCB.

I bought a 7850 a while back that BARELY fit into my case. We're talking the width of a PATA cable between fitting and not fitting.

Yeah quality on my 290's is a bit meh. One is awesome around 80C max load, one was kinda meh at around 87C, and one got up to 94C by itself before throttling.

These are all by themselves and not with the crazy trifire setup above. Also they're 290's not 290x's like the image is labeled.
