IMO everyone needs at least 3 editors:

1. Main IDE for your most common language, day to day shit. Why make things difficult for yourself?

2. Snappy little editor for scripting, playing with other languages - see Sublime, Atom, Brackets, Notepad++, etc.

3. Vi, because it's fucking everywhere and you'll be grateful for taking the time to learn the basics.

Emacs fits the first 2 (can't speak for Java/C# support though), and a lot of people don't really go up to random computers that don't allow you to install your own software on them enough to warrant learning Vi.

Nano is also pretty common if you need something quick and easy.

I know its stupid to argue about tastes .
But really Sublime nailed it . It has smooth gentle look and theme its easily configurable using only json.
Its written in C. I dont know if anyone noticed or compared but it takes Atom/Brackets x10 more time to fully boot and open while Sublime opens where you left in less than a second.
For any beginners seeking easy and obvious explanation for software's performance and why C , there you have it.
Superb package installing and managing.

Clicking or keyboard shortcuts for navigating, eternal war. I say , why not both? Depending on situation always seek the most practical way.

Why not? Emacs has a neat package system (it's getting better in v25!)

It's not like you have to use it either. Just don't (require 'package)... in the init file.

Certainly Emacs goes overboard with things (there's a builtin function for getting and printing the phases of the moon for your current area), but that stuff is autoloaded anyway.
The package system however is indeed nice; a lot of extra functionality that you'd like for your editor can be downloaded through package.el and byte-compiled/autoloaded for you, checking for updates and dependencies as necessary.
I'm not sure why that would be a negative thing considering Emacs is hailed as the `extensible text editor'.
