I took a statistics class once. It was literally just mashing bull shot together until you achieve conformation bias.

It was the worst "math" class I have had, and I have taken a ton of math for my BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Programmers are generally decent at math. Not math geniuses, but better than the average person (who absolutely sucks at math). It also varies what subset of programmers you're looking at. The average webdev code monkey who glues libraries together is probably not as good at math than the academic who's analysing the performance of his algorithm.

That said, Zed Shaw is a massive hack and ever reading his Hard Way books is a tremendous mistake. Try Think Python instead, it's actually a good book.
