However if you're wanting to do this for a living, having a degree is better than not, especially if you lack work experience. You'll be competing against applicants who do have degrees and/or experience. Having that piece of paper could mean the difference in being seriously considered for the job, or not. You don't necessarily need a CS degree though, just some field that is related, or overlaps with it.
