I posted this a while ago, added some details and such. I made this for a board game design I'm working on (This'll be the box art, card backing and rulebook cover)

I'm not nearly as professional as anyone else here, I made this in about 3 hours.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Fixes?

Not trying to be a dick, but there's a certain point where you need to just hire a designer because nothing you're capable of is gonna be decent. Especially since you're actually putting out a product, you should be putting in the money to make it look legit.

I understand that, but for the time being, what should be fixed? I'd rather try fixing it myself first, instead of dropping money to some guy and going "Here, do something", and it comes back even worse. (That's happened before)

It's everything really.
The black and grey outlines on a black to grey gradient are just awful.
The font choice is. Not great. And the placement is bad for the design. The font color (once again) being black and grey don't help either.
You have gradients on each crystal that don't look very good.
There's just so much that must be fixed. Just hire someone and work with them, but you've got to scrap this design and start from scratch

Have them look like towers or something. I would imagine that each tower would have a colored gem in it or something, you can try differenitiating them later, otherwise, it just looks like an mtg clone. Plus the text covers some of the gems, so I would suggest you don't do that. The text could be in a heavier font. Also, too many gradients, they don't mean anything.

Just sketch out a lot of ideas before committing so much time to them on a computer. Choose some of the ones you think look good, and step back and look at the big picture. If you do this, your work will come out better.

Understand this: graphic design isn't an easy thing that anyone can just pick up and do. I'm of the opinion that just about anyone can become good at it, but it takes a long time and a lot of effort. You're not going to make something good for this despite the advice you've received ITT because you aren't good yet.

If you hired a designer in the past and got burnt, then hire a better one, not just "some guy". Look at his portfolio first, make sure you like the stuff he does, make sure he's a professional who'll send you an actual proposal and ask you a lot of questions about the project and work with you on it from start to finish, not just take your money and come back with some finished product whether you like it or not.

lord, that's awful. I particularly like how you cannot read the text because the blue diamond/crystal/whatever that turd is supposed to be interferes with it. Also the gradients and the completely screwed up jewel effect.

I guess I've seen worse on this board before, but I think this might go into a "bottom 10" or even "bottom 5" list.

the spacing of the far jewels is way wider, the blue jewel is way too high, the outermost jewels are way too far out, the spacing of jewels at the front is way too dense, the red jewel is way too big...

Card backs are usually vertical right? unless the front faces are horizontal which is quite rare.

I had a quick go, although the "door" shapes are driving me insane.
