I feel like it might be a more handmade, but still digital aesthetic as a response to the digital geometric "flat" movement that was popular for a while. I'm seeing more and more of this kind of thing.

I think you're right. I recently went to a special screening of a new ocumentary/film out about the DIY graphic arts scene in the UK. All about digital/analog ways of working, and how the designers are working with and around technology.

The "multiple typefaces" thing is called vernacular typography and it's never gonna end since it's only the abolishment of hierarchies in types and letteriings. And it has nothing to do with the typographic renewal of the industrial era (pic)

This is happeing since the 80's, there is nothing new about it, DIY is there since letraset and xerox. The fact that designers use digital and analog ways of working is just normal.
