Since the programs you will be using as a graphic designer are resource and graphically intensive, I'd advise not picking up some junk cheapo laptop. I've used Windows my whole life and while I dislike Apple, I personally recommend getting a used or refurbished 2011 Macbook Pro (assuming you don't want to spend a whole lot). If you have the money and want to avoid Apple, look towards "Gaming Laptops".

The new Windows Surfacebook looks okay. I didn't read much into it yet but apparently it doubles as an artists tablet and comes preloaded with Photoshop and Autodesk Maya? I could be wrong though.

Landed 3 internships and my current full-time job working from my own PC laptop. Don't listen to these posers OP, you've got the right idea.

Just buy something with at least i5, a decent amount of ram (8gb or more) and a dedicated graphics card of some kind. Job done.
