How do you make a presentation folio of your work? I cant seem to get past the basic idea that youre just displaying the basic layout or whatever and theres only a limited way of doing that.

Had the same issue when I was starting out, took the plunge and decided to make my portfolio completely internet based (keeping a physical back-up... just incase) Onefile Nomad is a great tool to utilize, simply because you can break all of your work down into as many categories as you see fit, you can also post links to other peices of work you may have uploaded to other online storage sites and they will work instantly. All you would then need to do is grant people access for as long a time as necessary, their log in will expire after X amount of time.

that is helpful but I was really thinking more about how to present a finished peice in some creative way. Maybe its not as hard as im thinking it is. For example that pic above is a cool presentation idea but then it still comes down to just "here it is"

Some things should just be put up as they are, such as a painting or poster. You have to think about how your form of presentation adds value to the work. The one in the OP just looks like a separate piece that can detract from the original.

Yes it is a seperate peice. Its supposed to be selling a work to a client who has commisioned it. I think like you, just present it as it is, but apparently presenting is a whole other level of brainstorming and concept development.

Well show it in use doofus!
Like, put your flyer on a shelf among other flyers, or your book design in the toilet, or your teeshirt design on someone in the street…
You want to be creative, put your book/leaflet/whatever in a gutter and piss on it.
Spraypaint your best logo on someone's boobs.
Screenprint your indesign layout on the back of a skateboard or on a mug.
But don't get rid of the more basic form of presentation, cause as much as people want to see creativity, if they don't get what it's about, they think it's shit.

Don't be too creative when putting together a portfolio. You can easily overdue it and the work which you're highlighting becomes lost.

Keep it clean and simple; straight to the point. Place emphasis on the work and let it speak for itself. Do it right though. Use common sense when it comes to image and type size, font choices, etc.

Your portfolio will not be reviewed like an art/design piece. It will be flipped through in 2-3 minutes tops, and probably by someone who has little to no formal design training or experience.

8x10, landscape or portrait, is a good size to go with. It's bigger then most books, but still won't wipe out an entire desk or be difficult to handle.

That's what you feel because your portfolio probably isn't ready? The only thing that counts is the content (visually strong) followed by a coherent description.

A perfectly fitting wardrobe doesn't make an ugly man looking good... Then we can argue about ethics and aesthetics but it isn't the point.
