How do I get this effect in a photo?

I'm guessing it's a gradient of some sort?

Open the desired image.

First step:
image > mode > grayscale

second step once the img is grayscale
image > mode > Bitmap...

here and window will open. make sure the settings are like the image i posted

then press ok

a new window will open, try some different values. but the picture you posted would be something around the values in the picture

Changing color modes to destruct an image to get a simple effect? What the FUCK my man..?

OP, make a smart object of your layer and go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. Set tour pattern type to horizontal line. That's literally it. Apply the black & white adjustment layer if needed.

This will flatten your layers, adjustment layers and groups, absolutely destroy the image and break any anti-aliasing you had. There is no sense in using this method.

Make a new document with the size of 1 x 2 pixels
Use the pencil brush and place one black pixel.
Go to edit define pattern
Open an image
Go to blending modes and add the pattern

You mean new layer with pattern on it, then switching blending mode ?
Or there is some other witchcraft involved ?

to be fair, both methods are shitty. It's a pick-your-poison situation. The bitmap destroys your image, but the choices in Smart Filters are more limited.

photoshop. if you use live trace in illustrator tho it cleans up the effect pretty well
