So I have been all over Asia, and Korea's relationship with sex isn't that far off from the rest of Asia, but it developed into its own unique beast. I am no anthropologist, so I can say what are the causes, only the symptons.
On Porn:
Legislators, like most of Asia, are pretty conservative, so they've banned pornography and even banned overtly sexual content in their mainstream media. The rest of the country though ... Is fucking nuts about sex.
I guarantee the average Korean male consumes just as much porn as any other hot blooded American male. They don't have any professional produced domestic porn, but they consume the Japanese products just fine.
During my stay in Seoul, I stayed in a love hotel (more on this later), and they had porn playing on some channels there. Mostly amateur shit with shitty cameras. I guess you could say the porn ban is not heavily enforced.
On Plastic Surgery:
If you walk around Seoul, the ratio of good looking women (and I guess even good looking men) to bad looking women is extremely high. Higher than anywhere else I've been in Asia. Looks matter a lot. Indeed a lot of it is due to plastic surgery, though it is of course worth noting that everyone is using cosmetics/make-up in general. It is not an uncommon sight to see women fixing their make-up on trains.]
When I say image matters a lot, it even permeates their service industry. One thing I noticed was that if you're in the city, I saw almost no old people employed anywhere. Workforce was almost always young looking with a few exceptions. I didn't find out where the senior citizens were until I found the local soup kitchen. I think that message was pretty clear about what happens if you're old and not so good looking anymore.
