I remember reading a case about this accountant or something that stole information, he kept it in a truecrypt volume and they weren't able to break into it, not even after 2 years.
He later got caught for something else.
Also not saving stuff locally won't protect you if you are a freak that's into illegal stuff.
Every time you load an image it gets saved locally at least temporarily, your ISP probably has logs of all the sites you've visited not to mention if you use any software or services that might track you such as basically anything google you could get caught out that way.
