Just judging from the distances between Hobbiton/Bree, Minas Tirith/Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur/Lonely Mountain, I'd estimate Middle Earth to be about the size of Austria, and that's correcting for the "miles" indicator on the map that is clearly very wrong.
