Lets talk pigments and palettes. How many paints do you like to work with?

I like about 12 or so because I can get a bunch of more simple palettes out of it and have variety to approaches. I have a number of umbers and siennas I rotate out and like having both blacks for underpainting and whatever else that take up a good chunk of it.

The rest really depends on my mood and needs. Prussian blue is a mainstay alongside either cerulean or ultramarine and cobalt has its own specific applications. I used to use pthalo blue for a cmyk palette but the brand stained like hell and was just annoying. I used to mix my own greens but sap and viridian make it easier to really push highlights and work more saturated. For yellow I use a GS and a much warmer one, but rely more on yellow ochre because I don't usually work super bright.

Reds are a quinacridone magenta and some dark shit I never end up using along with a violet that rarely sees action. It's easier to suggest dark, saturated reds and purples than it is to actually paint with them. Sometimes I just use a diluted black wash and push the green around it.

Overall, I only use maybe 4 or 5 paints at any given time and tend to work more muted but like being able to stretch out into the garish fluorescent range when need be. What you can do with just Prussian blue and sienna is mind blowing and expanding it without a reason or way to reign it in is usually disastrous. I want to do more with opaque pigments but don't really know what or how.

Think more about your brush symbols and what they express. Either Sargent or an ink and wash heavy comic artist like Hugo Pratt is an excellent way to study how abstract blotches and brush lines suggest things better than actually painting them. Bad strokes like the one in the top right are what you need to avoid. Not every stroke has to count, but the more watercolory and impressionistic you get with it, the fewer you have to work with and the more visible they are.

What are you doing with 20? I only use 13 because I'm too lazy to mix more than two pigments most of the time. I'm also too cheap to maintain a stable like that. Some of them horses eat some money.

I have 2 greens, 2 blues, a primary yellow, primary red, burnt umber, and a paynes gray, which is more like a dark blue instead of a cool gray. I think I'd like another yellow, another red, and maybe a more nueteal gray, though mixing grays can be hard.

With the blues, all you need is a black to make paynes gray and two of your normal paints that you change so they they neutralize well for everything else. You have to add black but you get rid of that grey and gain a couple easy combinations that are usually convenience mixtures. It ends up covering your entire neutral range.

To clean the brush you generally rub it into a cloth or something to get the paint off, they're all synthetic hairs so they can take a bit of abuse but the hairs do come out. If you treat them well, keep them clean after every use and don't fill it with something stupid they should last a long time. I've had mine for over 5 years and it still works great.

I suggest the large pentel waterbrush. It has a breather hole so the pigment does not get sucked in when you release the squeeze. I got mine $8 at amazon.They are sometimes difficult to keep a flat wash. I like them a lot. I do not know how long they last.

How do you force yourself to stop treating watercolor like an exacting and detailed medium?

Every time I try it out, I always get caught up in the details and gravitate to hard and rigid edges (pic related). Everything else just turns out muddy since I can't seem to trust the paint to mingle on its own. Everything that makes watercolor awesome eludes me in practice.

The only one I use is lifting. I tried salt once but it was too messy.
I think the fan brushes can do a ton of things so I like it, but I do not own one anymore because I can get many of those effects with a round brush.

I have trouble doing bricks and stone texture with watercolor. I am using European watercolor, not Asian. Does anyone have any tips for that?

watercolour is a "happy accident" medium. don't force the paint to do what you want. work with your paint and let it paint itself.

The aqua mini or the 12 + 8 set, I have the aqua mini and it is great, just requires much mixing. Use a shitty 99 cent palette from your local art store or online. I have one with 9 wells.

You will need to buy your own palette. There are some on amazon. I suggest a metal box.

Brushes are just important. I did not find this out until I started using artist quality paints. I suggest round or something similar, a size 2, size 4 or 6, and a size 8 or 10, all depending on what size paper.
If your budget is tight, I say go with a pentel aquash size large, or the da vinci cosmotop (sorry if that is spelled incorrectly) series, also found on dick blick.

That sketchbook is nice. If you prefer portrait format, there is a moleskin brand in the related products on that page.
Do not feel bad that it is expensive or anything. All of this is good quality. For pens, lots of people like sakura micron and zig millennium. I like them but I prefer felt "brush pens" from faber castell. Another good brand is uniball. Their signo gel pens are waterproof and come in 12 packs on amazon for about... 8 dollars i think. Adding to what the other poster said:

There are mixed sets of 4-8 brushes on amazon were the brushes don't lose hair, which is already plenty (and expensive enough). Natural hair isn't important.

other interesting stuff:
- liner
- (graduated) pipette for water
- special tape for fixing the paper without tearing it when you remove it
- masking fluid

I cannot recommend paper blocks which are glued on two and more sides. You will tear the paper to pieces if you try to remove a sheet or damage it in some other way.

I suggest staying away from both personally. Cotman watercolors are supposed to be okay, but not great. Artists watercolor acts differently. I feel you get more variety from one paint set. I listed earlier two sets from different brands, each costing only $20.

Assuming you are not using wet on wet techniques, just dampen your brush and wipe it off. The brush should not be dripping. Just wet to the touch. That's what I do for the most pigmented colors.

If you have the money it might be worth it to shell out $20 for this guy's videos. They got me into watercolor painting, and I think he lays out the fundamentals really well. They're also interesting as fuck to watch. They've been invaluable to me since I started watercolor.

Have you guys seen watercolor works that Dave Rapoza did? Watercolors are hard even for pro's, but he tried it a few times and made a really cool piece already. Not on Adrian Smith level, but kinda similar in style.

Anyway, I tried watercolors for months without any result, all of my attempts looked like shit. It's not for me, apparently I don't have the patience required to not fuck up with it.

they are so convenient and great for an effect of going from light to dark, or pigmented to unsaturated. How do you like it? I like mine very much but i feel that sometimes, the weight of the water inside of the brush pushes water out, causing my brush to have an inconsistent amount of water. I picked up a sable travel brush but it will not be here until around Halloween.

How minimal are we talking? You could probably go as low as three, using primary yellow/cyan/magenta and still get a fairly wide gamut.

I was thinking around 3-8 colors. What I meant was, which particular Holbein colors should I buy to have a more or less complete palette? If I can go with 3 primaries, which ones would you suggest, based on your experience with the brand? It's the one I can afford and is actually available at art stores in my country. I read that Holbein colors aren't always what they advertise on the label, so I thought I'd ask.

I'm not familiar with Holbien, I was just trying to get some more information. That said, the palette will probably be similar regardless of brand. As for colors not being what's advertised, I can't speak to that but it's not uncommon to see non-toxic version of older toxic pigments like the cadmiums, usually marketed as "hue" rather than the color itself(according to Handprint, Holbien doesn't do this). You can look up the pigments used in Holbien paints on Handprint if you're really worried about which paints are what they claim to be.

Based on their color chart, for a 3 tube palette I'd probably go with Quinacridone Magenta, Pthalo Blue YS, and Permanent Yellow Light. To bring that up to 8 I would probably add Hooker's Green, Ultramarine, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Seinna, and Burnt Umber.

The amazon link would have been my first choice!! But shipping to my country doubles the price of anything you buy online unfortunately. I'm going for Holbein because it's what we have here. But they don't sell them in sets, only individual tubes. :(

There isn't really any "wrong" colors per say, just limitations. You can make a workable palette from Cadmium Orange, Viridian, and Dioxazine Violet if you really want, and still be able to mix a large range of colors. Depending on what colors you include in your palette some things will be easier to mix because of the colors you start from(see: why I have Burnt Sienna, above) or harder(green is commonly cited as difficult to mix), and colors will be weakest at the midpoint of a mixture - i.e., you can mix purple from blue and red, but a purple pigment will be more saturated. Likewise, you can mix blue from green and purple, but the blue pigment will be stronger, ect. Part of assembling a palette comes down to trial and error, and what works for you personally, and what colors you tend to use and what you find annoying or difficult to mix and what colors you don't mix often, not to mention what you paint.

Don't sweat it too much, get some colors and experiment with them, and then adjust later as needed.

i keep water in mine all the time, i've had it for 3 months. Just store it so that the nib is upwards and the water is not seeping out of the bristles. Also do not do this if there is a hole in the cap. Mold may grow then.

If I'm correct The later is putting more concentrated pigment into the paper while the latter is layering it. Does it make a difference?

I personally like the paper blocks, they don't tear but are kinda hard to do take the paper apart from. just dig yout nail in there and its ok. But I never experienced tearing.

Hi i just finished my yellow, brown., and paynes gray of that mini sennelier set. It is too difficult for me to paint extremely colorful paintings now, but it is still fun to use. I will buy holbien next. One thing I would say is that it is perfect for 1-2 layers, but any more than that causes the colors to become somewhat muddly and ugly looking. I've tried several techniques and i usually get the same results. I feel like that red will last forever. Only one touch and you have enough to fill half of a page of A5 paper. It's crazy.

I also am just finishing the pentallic watercolor journal. One piece of paper (4 pages/2sheets) were not treated properly. The ink i had used for the rest of the book would bleed everrrywhere. The colors would blend and granulate as if they were a layer below what I could alter. It was weird. Thet also were yellowish compared to other pages. The binding in the very middle came completely apart. The cotton paper expands, but does not warp much.

I have tried molskine before and i like it much better. I do not like strathmore so much. I'm going to try global art materials sketchbooks. I'll let you all know how I feel about this.

Also, i wish i had bought a size 4 or 5 sable brush instead of a size 8. It's very difficult to get details and to move color that is already on the paper. I prefer synthetic brushes for details and sable brushes for more flat washes and larger areas.

I personally have alot of different paints (I hoard art supplies) but I end up using a similar amount. 12 is pretty good and I would say I use about that much but idk really.Generally I go through a process of pre mixing and mapping out colors. Sometimes I'll work off of specific sets just to see what I can do with them.

I like lots of color but I prefer to really be neurotic about the color and take my sweet time to draw out the ideal hue with transparent washes.

The colors I end up using the most are ultramarine blue, raw umber, yellow ochre, and quinacridone magenta (along with white and black oc) but I feel like with all those colors it's pretty easy to tint things to where you need it, especially with ultramarine and umber.

The colors that see the least action in my sets are usually always greens and violets. Mostly because for the greens it always doesn't seem....right and violets are not apart of the color scheme too much. Idk not a fan.

Those black lines look as if they were done with the watercolor. Personally, i find that unattractive for these particular pieces. Use a pen instead. Also this looks much better now that you've scanned it

I just started painting two weeks ago, not even painting for real, just using watercolor (mostly pencils, actually) to fill in drawings, and while I'm doing a little progress making the paint stay were I want they still look bright, primary and childish, I realized I have absolutely no knowledge of color theory, and can't make them look the way I want to to save my life, I'm not even sure if I know what "warm" and "cold" colors are, so I'm in desperate need of any material about this subject, specially if they contain techniques that can be used with water color pencils instead of actual paint.

On trusting watercolor: Unless you're going for a neutral-tone paining, you probably want nice vivid colors. The best advice I got to avoiding mud is that you get to pick two from RYB. Mix two, and your colors will stay vibrant. Mix three and you have mud.

Also, paint wet into wet and keep all your edges soft until you get to the vibrant mid-tones, then keep 80% of your edges soft. Once you're in the darks, you can let 50% of those edges be hard.

Sargent's loosey-goosey looking style is actually as exacting as your pic related, however most of that exactitude is prior to setting the brush on paper. The people that recommend "happy accidents" are incorrect. Happy accidents do happen, but it's really a lot more about understanding how edge control works and timing your strokes to how wet/dry the paper is.

Quick question, what brand of pencils are you using? I dont know of any books on watercolor pencils at all. Prismacolors watercolor pencils are pretty delicious too. Although you might have a problem with breakage inside the wood casing.

I had some from general's brand too that lasted me over the years that were cheap but really did their job. Although they are REALLY old so idk if the formula has been altered in any way.

Not him but god fucking damn i tried prismacolor premier and i fucking hated them. Much too creamy and i felt i had no control after only 3 or 4 layers. They didn't really "mix" well, either. They just kinda blured for the most part. Try caran dnache (regular pencils, not watercolor) if you have the money.

I do three different things:
I dont let my brush touch that area

I use winsor and newton masking fluid (i recommend using tinted, not clear. I can hardly see where i put it on already and where i havent.)

Color in with white gel pen or painter marker
