here's a test at increasing flashes line fidelity
(believe it or not stage size does make a difference in how flash chooses to register the line marks, I'm liking working in 1.5 hd instead, you can always optimize the lines after.

can't* pay for, damn I'm slow today, anyway, creative clouds sucks balls but the suite gives you everything you need to animate and composite with hence why I'm using flash, if I really wanted to make things pretty I could import into Photoshop (like that 5cm per second Japanese animator). But that kinda detail is generally to superfluous for the kind of shit I make.

It started out like a pretty solid short, the middle was really boring and the end was underwhelming.

Animation is okay, not too stupidly crazy and grotesque like most animations on youtube.

Art was all over the place, and most of the time the backgrounds, even though they were stylized, looked really bad and lazily drawn.

dithering and smoothing aren't worth it when you export, unless your using bitmap, gradients or video. In flash those two functions fuck up flashes vector interpretation and I've found it creates noise even on a blank stage

The extreme facial expression is so short, that you can't really even see it. I know that may be your goal, but having the shocked expression last for just two frames longer would help this out tremendously.

Still adjusting the timings on this one.
The idea is get all the animation in twos (12fps)
Obviously the more dinamic the shot, the more dificult is to get the sweet spot, but i like it.

I am not a good drawer myself, but I recently started animating and to be honest, you can learn a lot by just animating. there's no reason not animate, just do it and get out of your comfort zone.
I did the same thing you did and now I feel so much better, alive and expressive because I tackled animation.

a good excerise that also is a good drawing exercise is to just roatate and warp perspective on objects. Try animating a head turn or a tea pot rotating in space. Keeping it look consistent is important to animation and also good measure of draftsmanship in general. Hell rotating a character in a pose requires spatial understanding.

references is somewhat important bro, in animation simplification is pretty significant, looking up how others animate fire, certain angles or even use blurs and smears can give you insight that takes a whole lot longer to intuitively develop. Not to mention animation timing is almost always different from nature for an assortment of reason and even finding the pace of some animators can be insightful compared to figure it out from scratch.

Does anyone know any tutorials on creating something inbetween puppet and traditional animation? No matter what, programming and rigging puppets in toonboom never looks good, yet I have a hard time being efficient and maintaining quality by going full on traditional in TVP.

Watch Draw with Jazzas deadpool pokemon battle let's animate video.
It's in flash, but he uses ingenious tricks to make it look good.
Also watch Egoraptors newest videos. It's done in such a way, that there's actually not that much animation, but the fbf stuff is enough to fool your eye into thinking there's much more going on.

It's actually harmony 12 essentials, the replacement for tb standard. You're probably better off sticking with animate until you can afford an upgrade. That said, I'm finding things I love and hate, compared to tb 11. Certain tools are in strange places, and the shortcuts are all changed. They have a classic shortcut option, but it seems finicky, and not all of them change, unless you change some manually. Stroke editor is 100000000x better, though. Partially because I'm using a fury X n instead of a 290, but also because they improved the editor, altogether.

Yes and no.
The sheer amount of time it takes to do a quality, proper traditional animation completely by yourself is ridiculous. Tweens done right, and mixed with fbf is still a big job, but is at least feasible for independent artists.

That being said, you can absolutely be lazy with tweening, and it shows big-time. I'm a fan of rigging, and copypasting. That is, rigging a puppet, and individual sections, then pasting them manually, to avoid the motion problems tweens introduce, altogether. It's far easier to reuse assets, that way, and I don't have to redraw and color as consistently, leaving more room for complexity in my drawing.

A lot better from where you started... like, ridiculously so. I know in the last animation you had a few parts where you got lazy, but in general it looked pretty decent. In this one you cut back those "lazy" parts and maintained a pretty consisted quality, though the animation on Alfred at the end was pretty lazy and that's a place you should never get lazy.

From a studio business point its much more risky to make 2d, the cost looks the same but 3d allows for much more return on stupid things unrelated to the style of the film even if the 3d film tanks. 2d requires the same amount of staff (in some weird cases maybe less) however they could cost more per person because their draftsmanship has to be better than an average 3d artist (or it takes a lot more effort on the art directors to keep shit consistent) because you can't split skill level like in 3d. Furthermore most studios now are outfitted with render farms that cost a lot, (and are less relevant to 2d films). Furthermore 3d assets can be saved for promotional purposes, used for sequels and have the flexibility to actually change completely in the middle of production, (in this way 3d is faster in terms of how much can be made and changed) allowing for post production levels of change that 2d can't even compete with because of the effort to make changes.

Good god I tried to animate a simple rotating cube and it ended up being totally fucked up. A testament to my lack of perspective studies. Hell, I failed the bouncing ball because the trajectory was off.

Did you just slow the entire piece?
I think what he meant is that part of it should be slower.
Slow when he adjusts himself lying down, and then slightly quicker as he gets up and walks away.
I don't know how to adjust this in tvpaint though

Any tips for beginning animators who can't afford flash...? I use pencil 2D at the moment, and I've animated a few things like a bouncing ball, walking animation, and a swinging leg. But I seem to have this issue where my in-between frames always look sloppy and complicate the animation. Do I just need to practice more?

I posted something here a year ago and was told to study perspective before I went any further. Ended up in a year long "git gud" distraction, completely forgot why I was studying to begin with. Back on the wagon now, have a study regiment that includes drawing and animating.

Is there a decent open source photo website for scenery?

I can't into decent backgrounds and at this point I either just want to trace them or straight up use live action backgrounds. I don't have any problems with perspective, it's just the detail work that always gets me.

Hello anons, here's a series of cycles I'm working on. They need a lot of work. I wanted to try and convert them into something digital so I could get better control over my colors so I tried the link in the OP for the program there. However it won't work, the file opens and I get the install prompt but then as far as I can tell it does nothing. There's no new files installed and the program doesn't open other than to trigger the install box and open a website before closing out. I've looked through all my folders (from what I've researched it should have installed in the portable folder, but it's not there).

Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone else have any other source besides the extremely helpful link in the OP? I'm on windows 8.1 x64

There's no anticipation or wind up motion. This makes the jump seem surreal. You can't have that much extreme twist without some sort of wind up first. Watch gymnasts and divers for reference. You need wind up.

I figured it out. It was some bullshit with one of my wacom .dlls

After uninstalling and doing a clean install of my driver everything works. Weird though, never had any issues with any other programs and my wacom drivers.

Be back later with more stuff and a digital version of what I initially posted.

sup /ic/ semibegginner here trying to do things for a game i'm making

just attempted a really quick idle animation test and it didnt really go well because of how erratic my planning was + my hurry to finish it to see how it would look in-game

i'm aware things are morphing around everywhere, i mostly need critique on the movement itself, since i'll probably do a lineart pass to make things stable and sweet-looking. (right now its all sketchy and shit)

the weapon he's holding is very lightweight and its held via a handle inside of it

the anim's at 60fps, but flash doesn't like exporting .gifs at 60, for some reason in here it looks slower in the first half (where there is more frames complete) than the second half (where there's a few uncomplete frames) so the playspeed is kinda erratic, anyone know a fix?

Not much to crit on the animation front though aside from the morphing. The range of motion is small, so any more overlap on the shoulders may or may not break it. A flip through some idle sprites and their range of motion in relationship to their size on the screen might be worth it.

Less shiny, and less loopy camera flythroughs to distract you from the story. Regardless, some of the best storytellers in animation are making 3d features, so it makes it harder to compete with them with 2d.

I had Toon Boom Studio, but the upgrade was more of an adjustment than I thought. My workflow is kind of fucked, and I'm not even doing anything too complex, just some character rigging and light fbf work. But even that is weirdly different.

Take breaks. It's pretty simple.

You should take breaks regardless, helps you refresh your view on what you're drawing and stops you from going full tunnel vision

In the context of Naruto, it's not good. Even for Naruto standards (which allows its animators quite a lot of freedom) it's too off-model.

In the context of the animator, Shingo Yamashita, it's still not very good. http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/16843/animated-character_acting-effects-fabric-hair-liqu

In general it's just a failed scene, most likely the result of having too little time. You can see from the way that it's colored that Yamashita probably did literally everything in that cut, from the animation to inking and coloring. That's almost completely unheard of for a television production. My guess is that they had very little time to finish the episode so they contacted Yamashita and told him to make the whole fight as quick as possible.

That said it's a fairly long fight. To think that the studio would want to rely on one person when behind schedule sounds ridiculous. They would save time by not having to send the cuts to be colored or anything, but they lose time by not spreading the workload to multiple animators. So maybe the studio was relatively caught up with the schedule, but it was Yamashita, trusted with soloing the whole fight, who fucked up. Just speculation

The issue though is that it was a fight scene meant to be taken seriously. The animation itself might be fine, but not for combat. It ruined one of the most important fights in the series for some of us seeing how cartoony they animated it.

No, this is objectively false. The ui is awful, the shortcuts are terrible, it doesn't work well with other programs, and the cracked version breaks pretty often. Flash has the best timeline of any animation program, graphics and symbols to drag and drop animations, works well with other adobe software, imports audio and other files better (drag and drop into flash), and uses vector lines that you can smooth.

Have you ever used flash before? Because the moment you make about 5 scenes of FBF animation the chances of crashing skyrocket. Not to mention the black fill glitch.

The only time TV Paint has ever crash for me at least; is when I fucked with effects bin too much for 60 frames.

In flash you can hit F8 on a drawing, quickly convert it into a symbol, then move it around and tween the animation.

Is there something similar I can do in toon boom? I thought I could just choose an empty frame on the drawing layer I made the drawing I wanted to use, tic the drawing I wanted to use in the settings, then just move it down and tween it, but all this does is stretch the frame of the initial drawing.

Anyone know a workaround?

Upgrading animation programs and computer hardware is an investment, imo. If you dont need it, dont worry about it. If its a want, chances are, you can wait. If you need it for some reason, the best choice is to look at each of the TB products.

The TB products changed their names: Toon Boom Studio is now Harmony Essentials, TB Animate is now called Harmony Advanced, and Harmony 12 is now Harmony Premium.

Check the system requirements for each program and decide how much money you want to shit out for it. I personally like TB, I used pencil 2d for a year or two before I upgraded to TB. Best decision I've made.

Once you decide on a TB animation program, you want, upgrade your computer.

hi /ic/ im the semibeginner guy from before; i had to redo everything cause i didnt think out the animation thru and it conflicted with how the game was going to work lol, i had to redo it and change his pose

so yeah here's a little proto anim showing the idle-to-run-to-runloop i need to get done. so far the idle's good and i kinda like the transition between idle and run but im not quite sure on the movement in the running loop. some critique and help would really come in handy. maybe i should make it faster by taking away some airtime? i was kinda aiming for cartoony so the airtime is kinda long

I once again come bearing gifts my friends. It looks like a few of you liked the rhinohouse ref site that I handed over last time so this should also be right up your ally. Here we have a nice dedicated to the art of storyboarding that summarizes the boards and all its caveats in a way that I've yet to see. It's really quite good.

Well first of all i'm not that guy. Secondly He never specifically called their work shit. He implied that it was shit. And I fully agree. From what I'm looking at he told one to learn how to draw (a justifiable criticism given how abundantly mediocre that anons drawing capability is) He told the other to actually try (albeit in a cynical manner) but still a valid response given how little effort was put into the tripe that was uploaded.

The weight after the swing should be on the leg in the back. They lean the upper body back with weight on that leg after they swing, it doesn't lift. At least from what I can visually remember.

thanks. i defnintely am having a few problems with distributing the weight. ill look into some more reference videos. from the one im working with now, his foot raises for a second but i think its because he slides it back and then pushes down on it, but i havent conveyed that very well

It doesn't quite look like the eye level is at shoulder height like you're making it out to be. I think you need to either start bringing down the shoulders as he is walking away (eye level at ~armpits), or if you don't want to draw the head then bring the hips up more aggressively.

We're missing out on a large portion of potential animators and discussion.

Even if it was a VERY slow board, that wouldn't matter either, its not like /3/ or /gd/ are fast boards, but they still serve an important purpose.

I'd understand a board that's about all things animation, not just the production aspect, but that can't really happen due to the history of this board (you can't combine /a/ and /co/ it wouldn't work.

That's because /co/ is about western animation specifically, and /a/ is Japanese animation specifically, so people go there to talk about animation shows, not animation itself.
