I want to draw on the bus or in the office or on the waterfront the fleeting moments when people are stopped but after trying with a regular pencil the need to sharpen is frustrating.

How do mechanical pencils compare to regular pencils in that regard? Is shading similar? Will I form bad habits? If any which should I get?

As far as lead pencils go though, my only experience are with Staedler Mars Technico, and while I like it a lot the lead is so thick it's just as prone to need sharpening as a regular pencil.

I don't think a thinner lead pencil will necessarily give you any bad habits. You might not get super smooth values, but you could always bring a regular pencil as well. The most important thing is to get the basics down, if you remember the lighting you can always add most of the lights and darks after you get the important parts on paper.

okay, i wanted to stick with one medium to some degree of competence but if a pen is the way to go I will do that.

You don't need to abandon pencils entirely, but pens are really nice for what you're trying to do.

A cheap ballpoint pen can still get a good value range, too, and you probably have one lying around right now.
