why are you wasting sketchbook paper? buy a ream of printer paper and practice on that doy! that way failure is not on your mind as you pursue learning new skills. look how clean and abundant it is, not to mention cheap.

Buy/cut hard carton for the back (optionally front too)
Buy a spiral for relegating paper, choose size appropriate to how many pages you want a book to have
Make holes on paper and carton
Tie together

You may want to use a machine that makes those holes faster and cleaner; I use the one in the office I work at. I bet people would let you use theirs anyway.

I bought a ream and a clipboard in February, finished the pack in September. I might have thrown away 10 pages, but i use both sides.
Started sketching with that because i was filling a sketchbook every three weeks or so with shit and felt awful about it.
Its saved me from buying at least five sketchbooks
So yeah, six bucks and the pack lasted me about six months. pleased enough to buy another ream and start again.

Or you could just do what I do and steal paper from the printers wherever you work/go to school. I just slide open the drawer things and take paper from there, and if I ever get caught I just say I'm checking for jams in the printer.

Nah... It's ok for really rough drawing and quick sketches, but it's cool to have a nice sketchbook with hard cover so you can draw without a table.
Also it's more presentable to other artists and artists love a good sketchbook. It impress people who doesn't draw too, they take it more seriously if you have a "fancy" book only for drawings.

Not that anon, but you can get them bound into books for like $3.50 each. I usually just leave everything loose, and then bind for archiving every year.

You can go to pretty much any copy center and ask for tape binding. They can usually bind up to about an inch thickness. I try to bind on the short edge because it's easier to flip through. Also I make a front and back cover out of card stock to protect he copy paper inside

You can also hole punch, but with the tape binding you can always tear out the page if you really want to - kind of like a notepad. I've never done it before, but the tape binding is a little less destructive, but also less robust.

You can feel the difference between sketch paper and printer paper and its worth an extra few dollars a month, and if you're doing anything beyond basic colors and lines it really makes a difference.

While I don't advocate going for moleskins or whatever the popular overpriced brand is these days, buying a cheap pad of 100 or so pages is worth it.

Stapling seems inconvenient because your paper stacks can't get very thick. Binding like >>2262298 is talking about seems to be the best idea if you wanna keep all of your stuff together.

Every couple of months I walk over to the office supply store and grab a 500 sheet ream of 11x17 printer paper.

For nice work I have bristol but for sketching the big sheets of printer paper are perfect.

Oh, and for intermediate stuff 32lb laser printer paper is both economical and of reasonably decent quality. It'll hold up to wet mediums better than the cheapo 20lb stuff and it's perfect for Copics.

I always get 160 paper sheets, cut them up clamp them together because I use different mediums and it's cheap. Size is depending on what size the sheet is. I mostly go for about 15 by 10 cm, because it needs to fit in pockets, I'm a filthy casual that only draws outside in public.

Why the hate about new teachers? Proko and ctrl+paint videos are good, can't say for the others because I never watched it.

Vilppu is good but hes videos are really boring or bad quality, it's hard to concentrate on the content when you're almost sleeping.

Loomis books are ok, but there is A LOT of alternatives out there, hes a meme not the only way, you can learn everything he has to say in form of video by watching Proko. Also, Michael Hampton books have a better and clearer method in my opinion.

I have personal experience with a Huion and they are fine. Using a regular pencil for mechanical drawing is ill-advised because the pencil's tip changes shape too rapidly-unless you actually want to spend all day sharpening with your shitty faggot manual eraser after making 3 10cm lines. They're great as an alternative to $5 a piece Staedtler pens for use in the Dynamic Sketching manual dexterity course.

Ive been using the same mech pencil every day all day for school and for drawing. Eventually, the part that clutches the pencil DOES get worn down. It eventually stops holding lead altogther. The one im using now has been in use all day every day for about 2 and a half years and is starting to loosen. Now i am getting a 2mm clutch pencil ($6) and a mech pencil once this one quits on me. They are $3 for a pack of three and i get lead for free from work.

I have a binder with printing paper for when I'm at home doing random shit.

I get a more portable sketchbook to carry around (even though I almost never draw in public anyway).

Some people also just like having a tidy, nicely bound sketchbook they can flip through.

It's a habit I picked up from a life drawing class, and it's awesome.

Just get a cloth and some watered down acrylics and dirty that shit up before you start. Obviously not good for sketching with pencil.

It does look kinda nice, but mainly it's psychological.
You don't stress so much about accidents, or being intimidated by a blank canvas.

It's probably more helpful for beginners, people who might stress about having their work look "clean" right from the start, and they can let themselves go and be more expressive and confident with their strokes.

I just like it at this point, feels like an easier starting point.

Yeah acrylic paints.
Just mix up a tiny bit of black paint with water, scrunch up a rag and dip it into the mixture and, and mess up your canvas/printer paper with the rag.

I usually (if I'm on the move) have a clipboard of 10 or so pages. Do all of my sketching/ concepts on printer paper because I make lots of mistakes and I like to be able to not care about it.
Making mistakes in a sketchbook that costs ~20 bucks hurts.
When I have a solid idea and/or sketch ill work in my sketchbooks.
I'm not saying what I do is right or wrong, but it's a lot more economical.
