Either way, shit like that looks 'good' from a distance and when obscured by the detail of the full image, but looking closer, you'll probably notice that lines are a lot wobblier than you thought.
A certain amount of pen control is necessary, but a lot of it is also just making the marks with confidence and not being a little bitch about it.
You're not a robot, shit will never be 100% tight.
Just do it, practice, etc.

The problem with most sketchbooks on the internet is that they are just masturbatory: people invest a lot of time in working on their sketchbooks to eventually post them on YouTube instead of using them as sources of initial work for greater enterprises.

If you look at Leonardo da Vinci sketchbooks, many of them were used to note down material that was eventually going to be used in greater paintings, or in book publications that Leonardo never finished, but at least programed. The same with Michelangelo: many of his drawing are preparatory studies for latter works.

Beethoven was notorious of using many sketchbooks, but the material inside of them was all eventually worked in sonatas, concertos and symphonies. Tolstoy wrote a lot of diaries, but he used the material to better understand himself and how the mind worked, and a lot of his personal experiences were latter used in his fiction.

The sketchbooks on the internet sometimes are the artwork themselves: their creators don’t seem to move forward to more ambitious and greater projects.

Well, I for one would not waste my time drawing for a big company only to have the director and a few other names receive all the praise. Better work in a part-time job and invest in your own art than to work like hell to produce Disney stuff and only be able to tell that “Yeah, I was on the Lion Kind drawing team, you know”. If you are skilled in many arts you can come up with great ideas for books and just create your own plots and characters and draw them. You can even use the opportunity to create more complex, meaningful and deeper stuff than Disney’s work.

I don’t know this CalArt, but it seems to me that they are selecting people to work in some sort of Disney or major studio drawing-factory. Who cares about that? Who cares about being one among the many workers of a cathedral? Better work on your own single buildings.

Why people need validation this much? If you are ambitious then learn how to paint and create large works, or learn how to sculpt and model, or learn how to write and work on novels, short stories and plays.

Anyone can draw on a small notebook and then show it on YouTube. If you want attention at least be really ambitious.

The thing is: there is not much difference between procrastination and drawing that particularly “sketchbook”: you are going to be forgotten anyway. Only art that is truly breathtaking will survive, and that’s actually much harder than just working on low-scale like that.

Get multiple sketchbooks. A few for actually sketching and one nice one that you use for mostly just creative studies. Not everything in his sketchbook is perfectly finished and although certain motifs and patterns repeat themselves it's pretty expressive and fluid.

What he has isn't really a sketchbook in the traditional sense it's more of compiled bunch of works.

LMAO what a fag. You can call that a drawing book but it's not really a sketchbook. You're not supposed to finish all of your sketches, that's just a waste of time. But hey you can use it as some form of portfolio. Just keep a real sketchbook too, for real sketches. Or just printer paper. Yeah he's good at this stuff; if he has fun doing it, who am I to judge? It's not impressive too. I got decent at drawing anime people in high school but that was all I could do. So he can do that because he practiced a lot, which is pointless unless you just enjoy it or maybe if you want to do tattoos.

Ive seen many people stating "rules" for a sketchbook. Guys, there are no god damn rules for a sketchbook. You can take a blank page book and put what ever the fuck you want on it.

Now the sketchbook the guy in OP's video has is obviously more of a gallery more than a sketchbook... but regardless its a sketchbook. Every piece in that book was made in his free time when he was bored. He made beautiful artwork and decided to show it off to people. If you guys are seriously jelly about it then go take your autism and make your own.

The artist probably has a practice sketchbook lying around somewhere that he uses frequently, but why would the public want to see that?

He could but that would require too much effort on his part. Much easier to draw angled lines and made up symbols rather than waeving a mythos or actually studying anything.

All a sketchbook is is paper in a bound form
It is just a way to make day to day drawing easier because drawing on loose bits of paper isn't very nice all the time

While I agree to a certain degree it can still be a good idea to have a nice-looking sketchbook.
Other artists will see through it but potential employers will look at the book and figure you're a really creative individual with a lot of great ideas sprouting from every orifice.
