"Action teapot" ceramics help.

So I have to make an action teapot. What that means is to make a functional teapot that doesn't look like a teapot at all. I choose a snail moving over a branch now I have until December to be finished completely with this. So I do have some time and it is rough. I want ideas on how to make the snail (the actual teapot which it is already hollow) more like a snail. I plan on adding texture and that swirl snails have on the shell, and to smooth out the body, but I feel like that isn't enough. I do plan on adding some super slip to the "branch" and the snail to make more distinct color differences. However what else should I add to the form? I was thinking flowers in patterns of ones and three at random areas. But that might be cliche.
