The younger generation feels less of a connection to China (and not just China but the concept of being Chinese) than their forefathers, they identify as Taiwanese and not Chinese.I'm thinking of it as an alternative to force in a scenario where China has the clear upper hand and the US nudges Taiwan in the "right" direction in order to avoid a war.
