Others (/pol/ types) always hated boat people because they don't like foreigners, but this is mainly a meme. The real concern was the integrity of borders.
Now, if people try to come by boat, if they make it before being turned back (which hardly ever happens now) they are sent to Nauru or an island off PNG where they are processed, and then settled somewhere else.
We usually pay other countries like yours, Cambodia, PNG and others to accept these people.
