Convince me not to move to the UK.
I'm a Canadian, nearly finished getting my bachelors in Kinesiology and Education.
England seems like a wonderful place full of wonderful people. But since I've only been there once very briefly in my youth, is there anything I should know or reasons not to live there that some locals could fill me in on?

Wowee look an actual answer. I want to live somewhere smaller. Somewhere that walking or public transportation is an option. Due to a horrible car crash which almost killed me I have a moderate fear of driving but have to do it everyday anyway to get to work and school.

I'd like a more moderate climate with less extreme temperature changes (+30 to -55 in 3-4 months)

I'd like to be able to travel to another country other than America without getting on a plane.

I want to live in a culture which is different from mine but still similar enough it wont be an extreme change.

The UK just seemed to fit the bill. I was thinking of living in some more country-y areas since I don't like cities, possibly Wales.

British people I've talked to in person were incredibly friendly. I realize that there are shitty people everywhere but I've had nothing but good experiences.

My heritage is also a mix of British and German so living near my roots would be nice.

There's more but I'll stop there.

Kek no, you will find out why soon enough. Leeds is pretty good though, I have never lived there but had great fun visiting for the odd weekend and enjoying nights out.

Thank you for the reply. I'm aware getting the huge house and such would be easier where I live, but all I want is an acre or two of land in the country, close enough to a school that my commute won't be too bad. I don't need anything fancy to be happy.

Wales is typically a lot more run down than England, due to being post industrial. Nothing inherently wrong with that but it would be worth researching it first. The fancy looking thatched cottages you see are nearly all in fancy areas and will be hard to emigrate to unless you have money. I think somewhere like Bath fits your ideas well. It's close to the country, isn't a big city but still has good transport links. It's also a very attractive place

That was an extremely helpful reply. I'll really look into bath. I mainly thought of Wales because I figured due to that run-downness I could get some cheap land. I don't care if my house is nice to begin with. I know enough to fix it up cheaply. It doesn't need to be big, just enough for two adults and a child.

It's very possible to find somewhere you can walk to work however a car might still be necessary. Most cities have a bus network but London is the only city with a proper metro system (and it's world class). Public transport in general across the UK is good. Our mild weather is one of the best things about the UK. It's actually very unique and changeable, because of our position on an island on the receiving end of the Gulf Stream and near the continent. I've heard Britain is the most difficult place to forecast weather in the world. Some people like our unpredictable weather, others hate it.

Getting on the train in London at King's Cross and going to Paris is a lovely experience and you should try it if you get the chance. You can then use the French HSR to travel into Germany, Spain, Belgium...

Yeah, an acre is a lot of land for anywhere in the South East of England really, which is the "most desirable" for lots of foreigners but by far the most expensive. Places in Wales and the north will be significantly cheaper, and just as pleasant. Northerners pride themselves on being more friendly

64 million people live in the UK and 35m live in Canada, and Canada is around 41 times the size. An acre would be cheap in Scotland or Wales (maybe NI I don't know), but in the heartland of England it will be expensive. Might be worth looking at a population density map if having land is a priority

If you want a bit of land to do what you want then a converted farmhouse might be good. Where I live houses are so expensive that getting a converted farmhouse just outside of the city limits would cost the same as a typical flat inside of it for example.
