That's actually a legit excuse though.
My excuse for carrying a screwdriver at the entrance to Parliament House was "you never know when you'll run into the corrections minister". The copper then laughed and said I could have it back when I came out of Parliament House.

You just need a reason for most things, they pretty much take anything other than "GONNA GLASS SUM KUNTS AYY".

Pretty much.
The point is that when police find some punks hanging around a dimly lit train station at night carrying knives, they can arrest them without waiting for them to actually rob someone.
If you're just going about your business and happen to be carrying a pocket knife, no one cares.
