I heard that no one in Europe holds the door open for people coming into a building.

Is that true? A British tourist told me that when I held the door open for him.

If we're right next to each other though I extend it more so the other person has time to hold it after I let go of the door.

Depends on how far the other person is and how well you know the other person. Holding doors open for strangers is only a thing when they use the door immediately after you. The better you know a person, the longer you'll hold open the door for them.

Also people will usually hold the door open for you if you have no hand free, such as when carrying boxes.
