That would happen in Spain France or Italy (and Brazil btw), Greece and Portugal are pretty chill about ir and most young people would know at least basic English from the media they re exposed to.
Why rhat happens? Short answer: Dubbing and delusions of relevance (especially italians, whose language is spoken in a total of one country in the whole world)

I think it is more of a Cultural pride thing. French and Italians have cultures that are superior to Anglo culture and they fear that if they are outbred by the Anglos their culture will be gone.

Kinda like how Americans are afraid that the Mexicans will destroy our culture by out-breeding us and displacing english. like how aramaic displaced babylonian in ancient times

It doesn't really take too much effort to memorize some basic phrases in the local language. Especially if it's a european language. Sure the accent can be hard to mimic for anglos, but they already know your a tourist, don't be self conscious

I had no problems in Spain tbh. People were very patient with my terrible Spanish. Maybe they just hate brits and could tell I was not British? I honestly have no idea if Spaniards can tell the difference between American and British accents
