>>49980819For all its economic woes, Serbia is still a far better place to live than the US, and I'm gladly returning as soon as I get my next degree.

>>49981352 neatly encapsulates everything wrong with the American mentality: all the valuable things in life are crudely reduced to hedonism and money. There is no soul of any kind to speak of in the American culture or in most of the people. Morality, dignity, courage, community, etc. aren't even consciously rejected; they're just completely absent from the American value system, despite some occasional lip service paid to them. Families are fragmented, real friendships are rarities, spiritual life is a farce at best, everything is mass-produced and mass-consumed, people hurry along the streets with their noses buried in electronic toys. Alienation is the rule of all life in the US.
It's nice to have the US around, since it is unquestionably a powerful economic engine, but it only becomes one at the expense of any sort of life beyond shallow pleasures, shallow social relations, and greed for its people. That said, the system seems to work well enough; most Americans never experience any other kind of lifestyle, so they never have cause to complain.
But if you honestly think just being rich makes the American life a better one, you have no idea what you are talking about.
