So the idea of a militant atheist lecturer failing someone for believing in God is really not something I find completely unbelivable, especially if he holds a personal grudge against christians or something.

These aren't the only scientific fields that cannot reconcile with various religious texts. For example, Geology in general has huge problem with the assumption of a young Earth.

That considered, 15 year old "Atheists" do need need to tip their fedora less. Not accepting a certain belief system does not make you inherently superior.

Unfortunately nearly all things in life require some amount of faith. In science, for example, no one has time to prove every scientific theorem to themselves, so they have to accept that whoever came up with the theory did their math properly (i.e. they have to have some faith).

If you have any interests to a certain phenomenon which has a scientific theory explaining it, you can always look it up and see the evidence for yourself. That way you can build up your trust in the system that is the scientific method, as you come to learn that it will indeed lay out the evidence for you to interpret for yourself.

but that still requires some degree of faith, how do you know the person writing it isn't just bullshitting or making a mistake? I'm not shitting on the scientific method, I work in science myself. I just don't think it's fair or constructive to compare every style of reasoning to "the scientific method", like it's some gold standard everything else must adhere to.

I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic schools, go to mass every week, participate in church life (charity, catechism, etc), and I'm even engaged to a religious girl. I like the morals and community bonds religion brings.

But I just can't bring myself to have faith. The religious people around me just believe. They just feel that God exists. But I just find myself looking for that feeling, or maybe I'm looking for proofs. Proofs that impossible to find, either way. I will never know for sure wether or not there is an all powerful superior being, a deity.

My fiancee knows that I have doubts, and she's fine with it . So it's fine, but still.

I think I agree to that, but you also have the option to review other people's work, and interpret it yourself. Whether or not it manage to convince you, it's still everything religion will never offer. Besides, normal people don't walk around claiming to know anything with 100% certainty because "that's what science says". They think it's the best explaination to date, and accepts it(or not) until the better explaination comes along.

Unfortunately, people do though, it's why the fedora meme is so popular. The scientific method is certainly one of the best reasoning tools we've come up with but some people have a bad habit of trying to apply it to areas where it is not applicable (e.g. theology).

Even people who are "know-it-all"s probably understands that the thing they claim to know 100% is what science says "right now", and not necessarily something that is determined and done with forever.
