There's an English requirement to get into my course but I've seen students unable to string together a sentence in my classes. My heart weeps for anyone who got put into a group assignment with them. Also remember a guy failing an oral exam and being held back while the next year I was in class with people who honest to god couldn't speak. Big money really does go a long way, literally buying degrees at this point.

Because in theory internationalization is a good thing, since it encourages ideas and knowledge exchange, but there is no way to measure its quality. For this system having a honor student from MIT or a stupid shit from Bangalore Technical University that doesn't even speak a comprehensible English have the same worth

They are cash cows. You can charge them whatever you want, and they'll pay it. Once they're in, they mostly cheat their way through and do fairly well because school is a broken system.

When I was in college(out of town from where I live) I met some cool international students. Spoke english well and we hold different conversations about their cunt. Ex. dude from trinidad told me about murders in broad daylight public spaces he had seen growing up. This was in 2009.

When I was in university (2012,briefly) the international students were culture shock - especially in my own city of about 220,000 people. The chinese, all Han - they hang out in these giant packs, they avoid anyone not chinese and sometimes loud. They are all rich kids, they pay like 3 times the tuition feed. I used to work with many Han chinese - most were borderline retarded - but this guy was hardworking and he was a cool motherfucker. We had a lot of fun.

I was only ever approached once by this 90lb loli chinese girl at the library that asked me for computer help. I asked her what province she was from in China. She told me she was from the North-East, and she wanted to start writing a book on tigers near her home village. Heartwarming tbh.

Indians- pretty quiet.

Arabs/Syriacs -annoying as f. "Cool kid muslims"(both males and females) who dress in expensive clothes and talk about Islam ALL FUCKING DAY LONG... Literally impossible to talk to them about anything else without offending them in a billion different ways.

I went to university in the UK (Leeds and Oxford) and they were mostly useless. Spanish students were the worst out of Europe and Chinese were the worst out of everyone.

The Spaniards genuinely did not care. I don't even know why they bothered, they never showed up to anything. The Chinese were notorious cheats and, as mentioned a lot ITT, formed groups with other Chinese and never moved out of them. Their English was terrible and I'm convinced there was a huge amount of fraud.

I never get why people can only study hardcore or concentrate in uni libraries and not home.

I hate to not have all my things around when studying or not being able to make free unlimited amounts of coffee. I go to the toilet in 5 seconds, can play music as loud as I want. Can take breaks whenever I want without losing spot. You guys are doing it all wrong

The school that I go to is trying to recruit more international students.

One of my three other roommates is from China. He's quiet and keeps to himself. He has a friend from Hong Kong that's really chill. the Chinese students smoke like fucking chimneys and are loud as fuck all of the time, especially when they're playing Dota 2. They're also all super rich. They've sort of accepted us and they'll take us out to dinner which they'll pay for.

It's mostly Kazakhs with some Russians and Ukrainians. They bunch up and ask for cigarettes which they will then chain smoke for half an hour and never pay you back for while talking about all of the women they want to fuck, but never will. I dated one of the Russian girls which was pretty much the only redeeming thing about the slav contingent.

The Kazakhs are the worst because they're all like five feet tall and get really salty at people that aren't manlets and they'll talk shit to you while you sit there and they do it behind the language barrier since they speak Kazakh.

The Africans are pretty disgusting. Most of them are the sons of politicians and have no problem telling you about all of the shitty things their parents do. They always brag about their parents' money and about how many cars they own back in their shithole country.

The Hispandex are mostly losers who pine over the slav girls, but they're usually awkward and the slavinkas friendzone them.

Unless you are in some sort of hard sciences or medicine then your "degree" really means jack all. People forget that "college" is just an opportunity for rich kids to meet up with other rich kids so they can continue to be rich when they get older and perhaps someone who isn't rich can ride on a rich kids coattails.

Now I made a swith to A.I. (cognitive science research master) and it's so much better. It might just be the difference between bachelors and masters in general, but the girls here are actually smart.

Eleviates some pain of being around total retards, but most of the library spots on my university are still dominated by grills who sit there all day stuffing their faces and talking about stupid shit.

You know what bothers me the most? That they kinda pretend to study, 'O look at me, all day at the uni, I'm so smart while actually I don't do shit' Same with the grills at psychology sitting in the lecture halls only talking about bullshit and not paying any attention.
Why the fuck would you even come if all you're gonna do is talk about how nice your avocado and egg breakfast was? Yup, to keep up appearances that you're smart.

This. I shared a house with a poor middle class Chinese student when I was at uni (2009). Bloke had basic English but it improved very rapidly after a year in the share house. He even started using Australian slang fluently by the time he left. He is now doing a PhD in computer science.

The only thing that can kinda suck for studying at home are my roommates, but I've gotten better at ignoring their stupid shit.

Roommate 1: Depressed out of his mind philosophy student (who right now has 10 pages of Das Kapital and claims all kinda stupid bullshit about how bad capitalism is and how we should all be socialists) who probably has no future at all in philosophy (who does this day and age). Sleeps about 12 hours per day and plays LoL the rest of his time. Right now he has put a sticker on his door saying: 'We're not asking for a free university, we're asking for a free society. Cause a free university in a capitalist society is like a lecture hall in prison.' Laughable.

Roommate 2: Great guy and one of my oldest friends, but a typical Dutch 'corpsbal.' Doing some economic study which he finds fucking boring but 'I wanna be rich when I grow old.' His main interest are drinking and fucking. He isn't very ambitious for anything really.

Roommate 3: Smart guy who finished his bachelor in Liberal arts and sciences but he's kinda stagnating at this point. Is stoned a lot and in the last couple of months watched all the fucking episodes of Naruto. Great guy though and I'm glad he is right now searching for a master.

Roommate 4: My brother, thank the lord, he has most of my interests and we kinda keep each other going. It kinda feels strange though when we're discussing the latest developments in neuroscience and Roommate 1 comes screaming into the room about how he just reached a new rank in Hearthstone. All I can think is: who fucking cares. I hope he finds something to enjoy besides escaping in games.

Exactly, I kinda used to be the same, a couple of years ago I played Dota 2 which took so many hours out of each day.

It's kinda hard to get him off though cause he uses it to escape reality.

He has been diagnosed with depression, social anxiety and PTSD from a fucked up experience on drugs with a fucked up crew.

It's really hard to behold, especially since my background lies in clinical psychology.

I'm really busy and can't help him in the way that I'd like. Partly because advice etc. from a friend doesn't have the same weight as advice from a licensed psychologist.

The problem is that he's becoming scared of seeing his psychologist because it confronts him with reality, he didn't go in the last 3 weeks.

It's really bad at this point cause I did see clear improvements when he did see the guy, he was more upbeat, slept less and did more in general and I can see him slipping back to his old self.

The most fucked up part is that I slowly start to dispise him. As if he has the power to change himself and does not intentionally (which is ofc bullshit). I feel myself get super angry when I come home from a long day and the house is a complete mess and he's just sitting there playing LoL while we have to clean around him.

But enough of this. No one is interested in me venting about my roommates.

You are very right, there is time to change! But you need to understand how hard it is to change when you are depressed and have social anxiety. He openes up every now and then and basically states that he doesn't feel competent to tackle the problems that life throws at him.

I have the confidence that it will get better, but it must be very hard to feel like you don't have the skills to be succesfull at life.

Let me elaborate. Just like many Westernes he did a very cliche 3 month trip through several parts of Asia when he was done with high school. When he got back, he realised he needed to get back in our society. So in his misguided new found enlightenment from Asia he decided he was a philosopher and went on to study philosophy with no further thought.

Now, 3 years later he has completed almost 1.5 year worth of courses.

Clinical talky talky can be trash, but not thanks to most clinical psychologist (who are generally really skilled at what they do) but thanks to health insurance companies who try to treat every person in the same cheap way.

They think that one size fits all, which is utter bullshit, but it is done because it's cheap. Moreover, therapy takes time, you got fucked up due to years of maladaptive behaviour etc. You can't expect a clinician to wave a magic wand and wow the problems are gone!

But due to budget cuts etc. most people in need in therapy don't get the time they need (or even deserve). Talking 1 hour per week is barely helpful since it can't do much if the rest of the 167 hours in the week you go back to your maladaptive behaviour.

In my view he needs to quit philosophy and start a more practical and structured study.

ABC here, I can confirm that Chinese international students don't mingle with us. They only hang out with other Chinese international students in large groups and are generally disruptive and rude, but that might be due to lack of cultural awareness. What's really unacceptable is their complete inability to speak or understand English. I have to speak in my broken Mandarin to communicate with them. Sometimes I wonder why they even show up to lectures.

Assume they passed. A massive cheating scandal broke at my uni amongst international students last year, was not a shocker. Cashed up asians are their bread and butter. This is the 4th ranked uni in the country and the writing class is particularly hard to get into.
