How do Spaniards feel about contemporary historians circlejerking to the thought of Muslim Spain?
Was it really the great place of tolerance and progress until Christians destroyed it?

Yes except for the borders in the north. Actually Al-Andalus was also the top of the science and laws in the medieval europe. Even the jews live between us with all the rights

It was conversion to islam or paying Jizya. Plus they couldnt marry islamic women, couldnt have islamic servants at home, receive ostentatious funerary rites, they had to live in separate neighbourhoods, couldnt hold public positions and had to give free hospitality to islamic men if they needed it.

Jews got progrom´d in a couple of occasions too.

It was an interesting era, and they truly were the scientific and artistic vanguard in europe, but Al-andalus was far from "the great place of tolerance and progress".

The cultural achievements of Islam are mostly from their conquests of absorbing other cultures into their own, then stagnating when that culture died.
