Why did Portugal, Spain and Italy become so shit as compared to the North-Western European countries?
I understand why Eastern Europe is so shit - They never had any history to speak of, they were always subjugated by others and never showed signs of civilization, and on top of that they had communism and/or Russians/Turks to deal with. Greece is an exception, they have a glorious history but Turks ruined them, obviously.
But what happened to Portugal, Spain and Italy? Portugal and Spain were colonial powers fairly recently, and Italy has a glorious past and a perfect location to be successful, but none of them are at the level of North-Western European countries.
