And while you may forget it, in 90s, Iraq was one of the worst places to live on Earth. No-fly zones, blockades, exclusion from international commune and all that jazz made Iraq something inbetween modern Afghanistan and Sudan.

The whole thing about AQ ties with Saddam? There was a CIA memo that spoke about it being "probable", coming from a single source. I.E. something that needed to be confirmed to be considered sure. And yet the politicians just ran with it.
The retardation that was the invasion of Iraq has a bit to do with the American intelligence community, but the majority of the responsibility sits squarely with the politician decision makers.
