>Eastern suburbsHistorically wealthy family area. Out to Surrey Hills is rich-tier 1930's houses. Box Hill outwards is full of Chinese. Further out than Nunawading is pretty average suburbia, and the Dandenong Ranges towns (Olinda, Kallista, and my hometown Belgrave etc.) are comfy as fuck local communities.
>South eastern suburbsReally rich around South Yarra, Caulfield and Glen Iris. Full of uni students and Vietnamese around Clayton and Glen Waverley due to Monash Uni. Springvale outwards is just bogans and Vietnamese, and then Pakenham is just cheap new development with African immigrants.
>Southern suburbsThere isn't really much of a south, but Middle Park and Albert Park are rich nice areas. St Kilda is cheaper and used to be a red light district, but is now pretty nice. A lot of Russian and European Jewish immigrants from post-WWII around Caulfield and St Kilda East. Bentleigh East, Brighton, and Sandringham are nice bayside areas. Areas down the bay like Keysborough, Cheltenham, Aspendale, Frankston etc. get progressively worse the further south you go.
>Western suburbsSeddon down to Williamstown is nice. The rest is total and utter shit. Broadmeadows is the "stereotypical shitty suburb" meme of Melbourne.
