>>50097907All US subs are nuclear powered subs. Our last Diesel subs were built in the 50s and are decommissioned now.
The oldest in service are the Los Angeles attack submarines, 39 of which are still in commission. Most of the Flight 1 models, which don't have VLS and can't launch tomahawks (land-attack) and harpoons (anti-ship) missiles are out of commission. Then you've got Flight 2, which gave it VLS, and then the 668 upgraded models, which have improved sonar, mine-laying capability, and arctic capability.
You've got the Seawolf attack class, which was an incredibly powerful design, but also incredibly expensive. Only 3 were built since the Cold War ended and there didn't seem to be much point to them.
The Virginia attack class is the one currently being built. Currently 12 are in service, and they're currently on Block 3, which has a LAB sonar array.
Then finally you've got the Ohio, which is the one most people care about because it's the one that carries nukes. It's actually split into 2 different classes though, the traditional 14 that carry Trident missiles, and 4 converted models which carry over 150 Tomahawk missiles.
