YPG kurds attempted to cross the Euphrates and dislodge ISIS from the Syrian town of Jarabulas (upper left of map). They were attacked by Turkey for their trouble and had to turn back. Can somebody explain to me the logic behind Erdogan's actions here?

Moreover, ISIS is helping Turkey damage Assad. Turkey doesn't want ISIS to lose too much before Assad is gone.

The same reason they're buying ISIS oil and shipping weapons to Islamists, although they know full well the potential for blowback

What's good is good, and what's bad is bad. The question of "who benefits more" is too complex, unless the consequences are truly apocalyptic. You end up with a web of contingencies which cripples action. I'm not defending it, but my impression is that this is the reasoning.
