You try to shrug off strange reports in the news. Giant meteors crashing into Russia. Strange spiralling lights above Norway. Sewers backing up from weird blobby substances. You pick up the phone and try to call a friend to go out and shake off the uncomfortable thoughts, but have to wait for a dial-tone and swear you can hear whispering foreign voices and then sudden silence again.
And when you walk out the door, you see an American tourist, smiling. Smiling at the quiet chaos creeping closer, smiling at the confusion swelling in your capital, smiling at the disoriented cacophany of the citizens all going somewhere and yet not really knowing why or where they will end up. Always smiling, seemingly for no reason at all. And then when you look again, you realize you are being watched.
