Last year the government spent 6 billions dollars to prevent deforestation, but it is hard to do anything when anyone can go to remote woods and the people in the amazon are hostile to the government trying to take their jobs.

130 years ago rubber was discovered in the amazon, and at the time it was the only place of the world with it. Many people went there in the hopes of making big money.
20 years later, the filth brits started producing rubber in Africa, and the prices fell so much it wasn't worthy it to get latex on the jungle anymore.
