Hey /jp/, I'm not a normal poster here but I've been watching a lot from this series:

And I feel like I've come to the conclusion that Japanese culture lacks originality, but is instead extremely good at incremental improvement.

For example anime is just the Japanese attempting to perfect the style of animation created by Disney.

It seems that nearly everything famous about Japan is just japan taking something that existed somewhere else and attempting to perfect it.

Am I right /jp/?

Not a complete vacuum but a partial vacuum can still exist within a country. Companies like Sony perfected the television and are the primary brand for many electronics today not through innovation, but through incremental perfection.

Meanwhile the U.S. and many western countries seek for sudden jumps in innovation.

The current trend in the global economy is innovation by the United States, improvement and perfection by the Japanese, and manufacturing by China.

Beyond the first animations ever made in Japan, this isn't true at all, and they weren't trying to "perfect" anything. That the US keeps being "inspired" by anime makes it clear that it's its own unique style. That Hollywood keeps trying to push for LA adaptations of anime/manga makes it clear that their stories are original as well--at least, more original than the typical Hollywood bullshit. Japanese classical film is some of the most influential and highly acclaimed in the world. That we continue to import Japanese cultural products is not due to their lack of originality or creativity; they're literally making things we can't here in the West. Given time, cultural separation/isolation, and "incremental improvement," original things end up being created; that's the pattern Japan continually goes through, though less so now thanks to globalization.

Given the way culture works, nothing is truly original. New things are built from old things. And so the label is just something that is arbitrarily thrown around to legitimize things at our convenience. That it's even something inherently good is begging the question. The truth is that most people like familiar, generic things and are afraid of things that are different.
