>>27740111Glenlivet 12 probably won't impress you. It is designed to be decent and unobjectionable, but it will never impress anyone. It's a safe purchase for any first single malt because it's so cheap that even if you hate it it won't be a case of "oh damn, I spent $50 on this and it's terrible. God damn scotch is such a ripoff". Even if you seriously hate the stuff you can at least mix it away into other drinks if you want, so it's forgiving in that regard.
That said, there are hundreds and hundreds of scotches, bourbons and ryes that I would pick at any price of glenlivet 12, or JW Red/Black/Green/Gold, or J&B, or Dewars, or JD, or Jim Beam, or Chivas, or whatever else they carry at the convenience store.
I'm a massive shill for Laphroaig Quarter Cask, it is, in my opinion, one of the best whiskys for its price on the market. It nothing close to bourbon. It has a character all it's own, and I never get tired of it at $55-$60 a bottle.
It's just a good, solid Scotch.
