first of all this is a great question but let me lead by correcting a common misconception. many americans pronounce the "zero" the same way they would for the number of chinese boys the japanese didn't rape aka "zee-ro." this is incorrect nomenclature as the japanese cannot prnounce english correctly and named the plane "zee-lo" which translates in french to "the low"
it was so-called because it couldn't really fly very high, the japanese believed that if you flew above 25k feet you would become a sun god or something so they figured they would bring the americans to them
so it was a good plane but the problem for the japanese was once ww2 started all of the great businessmen of the 1940s i.e. GM, GE, Ford, Studebaker, whatever, they all got together and just shook each others hands incredibly forcefully and we started building basically 1000 planes for every one zee-low.
to counteract this the japanese tried to fight what's called asymitry war but they had a fatal flaw:
their small penises. you see asian men are not well endowed, that's why they're always squinting to try to make it look bigger. well it led to tons of problems like in midway when they had like 5 battleships and cruisers and should have won but they just assumed our ships, which were basically motorboats with some armor, were bigger, and so they got embarassed and ran away
basically the same thing with aircraft design, also there was some issues with honor but i never really undersood that
also it was a mitsubishi. come on (no offense)
