I'll start -- the following videos are B-52's and tankers conducting minimum take-off interval (MITO) similar to what they would do during an alert for SAC. MITO would allow the maximum number of aircraft to get off the ground before the base was hit by either nuclear ICBM (30 minute launch-to-strike time) or Soviet bombers (4 hour or 6 hour launch-to-strike time depending on bomber route from patrol station).
The black smoke coming from the engines is from water injection. Water is normally injected either at the compressor inlet or in the diffuser just before the combustion chambers. Adding water increases the mass being accelerated out of the engine, increasing thrust, but it also serves to cool the turbines. Since temperature is normally the limiting factor in turbine engine performance at low altitudes, the cooling effect allows the engine to be run at higher RPM with more fuel injected and more thrust created without overheating.
