steel plates thin enough to not be cumbersome and annoying like WW1 armour could only slow bullets, causing even worse injuries, Britain considered using infantry armour in the 1940s, and even issued it to glider pilots (designed more for shrapnel though considering their pilot role), but it was seen as bad use of precious material that would probably cause even worse wounds, a steel plate either side of you could allow the bullet to penetrate, slow it down creating a larger cavity and then perhaps not allow it to exit, making the whole thing counter productive.
