What on earth made the US military design a rifle using this kind of ammunition holster instead of a traditional magazine with higher capacity?

It was a quick to reload semi with a generous 8 round clip in a time when most countries were using bolt actions with 5 round stripper-fed magazines, SMLE notwithstanding.

Your filename got it right, how did you not?

I haven't actually looked into it, but if I had to guess I'd say that it was a reliability thing, they probably didn't want more openings in the gun than were absolutely necessary. Like I said though, I'm pulling that out of my ass.

Someone should have /thread right here. OP, this is pretty much the answer you wanted, with the exception that the SMLE was never designed to have the magazine changed out--they were charged with strippers as well, albiet with two 5-round clips.

It was designed by a french canadian.
The Pedersen rifle oposed to the Garand also had a clip-like internal magazine. AS already said it was cheaper ans considered as the best of two worlds in a time when the transition between internal and external magazines was studied.
See french Mas 38 vs latest Mas40. Same semi-auto mechanism, except one has an internal magazine and the other an external one.

I always just figured it was just a daffy way to spell "N" since the clip looks like the lower-case n, kind of like wye is a dopey way to spell Y in some trade applications.

the American guns that used clips off the top of my head were 1903s and M1s.
