1. What kind of gun could that be? Can you provide some examples? (E.g. which .308 rifles are available in the Aussie black market and which one do you think they got hold of)

2. Why is it so scary? Does it ignore usual bulletproof armours? Why do policemen avoid pursuit?

308 is a battle rifle or hunting caliber.

If the rifle is a semi auto it could be a FAL,AR-10,m1a,g3 type rifles, ect

if it is a bolt action it could be anything. its more likely that it is a bolt action because its Australia and the only civilians with semi auto rifles are contract shooters.

308 will pierce any police officers normal body armor. rifle plates like the military and swat teams wear would stop it tho. but body armor doesn't mean you are bullet proof you can still get shot in the stomach, head, arms,legs and die

plus this is probably being blown way out of proportion because Australia's government wants to take more guns away from its people.

yeah its definitely being exaggerated for political reasons. those guys are probably a couple hicks just running around being cunts and shooting at the cops when they show up. The cops could find them and stop them if they wanted but they want to draw it out so that everyone is scared and votes for the politicians that are going to institute more laws to make them "feel safe".

you have nothing to be scared of. They will eventually be caught and they will probably even come quietly without a fight.

OP it is more or less confirmed that they have an SKS in 7.62x39, which I guess is technically a .308 (or thereabouts) bullet. Bit misleading (typical media) - 7.62x51 is more ".308". Source: everywhere.

The way you are reacting in this thread OP is how the media in Australia WANTS you to react.

They dont tell you it is a bolt action lifted from a farmer, because a farmers hunting rifle isn't scary.

.308 is scary. That is specific. That is something i as an uninformed consumer of media am unfamiliar with. However, as a grade school educated person I AM familiar with WW2 and how weapons are mentioned by caliber. The frightful 8.8 cm guns on the Tiger. The .50 BMG mounted on the American P-51 Mustang, the 40mm Bofors cannon, the 16 inch guns of the Iowa. When you attach a number you attach significance to that number.

In reality .308 is an incredibly common hunting caliber. Nothing frightening about it, honestly, in NATO countries it is probably one of, of not the most common hunting calibers due to its dimensional similarity to 7.62 NATO.

It isn't a toy caliber, it can penetrate soft body armor like tissue, but it is almost certainly just a bolt action gun.

The weapon can make this fugitive dangerous, but it isn't some apocalyptic gun of baby seeking proportions. The media is trying, and succeeding, at scaring you.
