so im watching the documentay korengal, and one of the people interviewed says a 50 bullet only needs to be within 18 inches of you to sear flesh.

Of course bullet fragmentation from a .50 could hurt you. I mean, not seriously unless you get a piece of it in your eyes, but I think we all remember the video of that guy shooting a .50 rifle at steel plate: the round bounces back, hits a couple meters in front of him, and a fragment of the bullet ricochets into his ear muffs, breaking them.

An AT-4's warhead works the same at 50 meters or 2000 meters. It is effective against T-72Ms.

We took to calling it the ghost tank. The idea that those toothless goat fuckers somehow had and were maintaining a fully armed and operational tank was quite frankly laughable in comparison to the crude level of tactics and weaponry we were encountering.
Fuckers couldnt even remember to pull the pins on thier RPG rounds.

You cant aim an AT-4 at that range, and in my expierience 40mm HEDP usually doesnt kill outright unless its in an enclosed space. Shoulda thrown it in that they were referring to HEDP which doesnt throw nearly as much shrapnel as frag does.

Yeah in my experience the Mk19 was pretty underwhelming. We had this blue-on-blue engagement where this USMC patrol lit up some Army MPs dismounted in some ruins. Marines went through a full box of 40mm and didn't injure or kill anybody.

You know, not many people actually interact with .50 cals on a normal basis.

I was in a unit that had .50 caliber M107 rifles, and we practiced with them fairly regularly. People from other units that didn't have .50 caliber rifles were always coming up to us and "informing" us about this or that false-fact about them. And of course we, the people who actually practiced with and used the rifles knew less than some random person who heard a rumor from the ether.

My favorite .50 myths are the legal ones. Like, that it's called an "Anti-material / anti-materiel" rifle as a wink-wink-nudge-nudge way of getting past the Geneva Convention, and that it is illegal to use the rifle on people.

People have a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that a rifle exists that really, seriously, honestly is not primarily designed to kill individual people.

They also have a hard time with the concept that just because the *primary* use is on material, that doesn't mean it can't be used on people if the opportunity arises.

Also, doesn't help that in some areas of the conflict, local rules-of-engagement say no .50 caliber allowed. (But that's because of concerns of civilian casualties.) People see that as "proof" you can't shoot .50 caliber at people.

I worked with a lot of weapons and explosives and stuff, and by far the .50 caliber rifle is the most mythical when it comes to crazy stories.

It effective range is at the edge is beyond the M4's and at the edge of the M249's. It is also tripod mounted and some rockets are supersonic. Most of the PG-9 rounds in AF are second hand but made in Bulgaria or Russia.
Conversely, the rockets most RPG-7's used by irregular forces in AF are Chinese made and their Fuzes and warheads suck. The last version of the Chinese type 69 warhead, after being revised twice, still wasn't as effective at penetration as the Bazalt ammunition.
This idea you have about these guys being dumb is pretty dumb itself.

An AT4 can go into a t72 from the side from 2km if you can manage to hit it. It may not go through the front, especially if there is ERA. Even then it is roughly 400mm of pen where some models of t72 have 400mm or so of armor on the turrets front.

I agree. If a village had that much anti-air, there would be much bigger worries. But in reference to the countermeasures... I know that system well. Very well. I know what it will and will not work against. I also know that someone like your LT should not rely on that system as much as he does. They're great, but they're not perfect. MANPADS or not.
