Talk to me about suppressors /k/.
What are some of the most trusted, best performing ones on the market? What features are common in ones that quiet the shot the most? What features of a gun make them less effective?
Tell me EVERYTHING because I literally know nothing.

Silencer Co is is one of the most reputable manufacturers in the US. AAC used to be one of the best, and was actually at the top of the game for years, but with their aquisition by freedom group certain things, namely customer service, has really fallen off.

most used nfa items are next to worthless due to the transfer taxes so they are lifetime purchases. spend the money you need to to get the suppressor you want (buy once cry once).

I have a 762-SD that I got during the damn the man promotion. The purchase was shortly before the big fall of AAC and because of that I regret not spending the extra couple of hundred on a 7.62 Saker and 5.56 end cap.

silencers are addictive. be prepared to buy several by the end of it.

Suggested order on any forum i've seen goes:
* 7.62 rifle even if you don't have anything in that caliber. You'll be able to shoot 5.56 out of it just fine.
* 22 lr
* a pistol caliber suppressor (depending upon what you have)

I've heard this but when I was looking at suppressors at my local gun shop on Friday they suggested to stay away from Silencerco for now. They said they have seem to gone down hill and they have had customers with some major problems with their cans. Maybe they just got a few bad ones in, but they've always steered me in the right path in the past.

Right now I'm looking at the Gem-Tech "One." It'd take care of both 7.62 and 5.56 needs.

If it's the EU the best (only) options are B+T and Ase Utra. (with ase being the same performance at half the price)

In the US there's a ton of manufacturers...
And the choice to a large degree dependent on caliber.

The main thing decreasing performance are.

1. Supersonic ammunition:
you can't suppress the "crack" of the bullet going through the air.
(124gr 9mm loud, 147gr 9mm ok)

2. Action noise: the bolt cycling might end up louder than the muzzle. A DI-AR is a bad idea, the back pressure is increased by almost all suppressors, most won't be hearing safe due to the gases being blown out of the ejection port.
Piston guns are less problematic.

The quietest combination is a bolt action gun (no moving parts) with sub-sonic ammunition and a good suppressor.

A DI-AR-10 in .308 will damage your hearing due to the action noise even if there's a huge can attached to a 24'' barrel, and the bullet crack still audible a few miles away from your position.

I'm pretty active on the NFA section of ARFCOM and silencer talk, I think you might want to peruse those two sites to see if you can find anything before you settle on spending 1k on a permanent purchase. The guys at your LGS might be trying to steer you towards something they have in stock or something they want to get out of stock (i.e. "new old stock").

If it was any other gun shop, I would have immediately thought the same. I give this shop most of my business so they treat me pretty well.

That said, I'm still looking around and kind of waiting to see what direction this National Hearing Protection Act heads in.

I don't know if it's going to remove it from being an NFA item or just remove the tax stamp. Although unlikely to pass this time around, it's a step in the right direction.

If you're in the US, you'll likely want to get a trust going. That's $130 from silencerco (easy trust), $200 stamp, then add the $ for the silencer. I suggest buying from an instate dealer, otherwise the online store (ie silencershop) has to form 5(?) it to your local dealer and that adds a month to the wait time, which will already be atleast 8 months.

All said and done, I spent close to $1500 for my Omega.

They aren't perfect, and won't eliminate all the noise, but it does some. Getting subsonic rounds like a 220gr 300blk in an SBR is pretty much an obligation at that point.

I don't know how I feel about doing one of those online pre-formatted trusts. My gun shop said there is a local attorney who'll do it for $300. I'm still debating whether or not I want an NFA trust or if it's worth it for one or two suppressors. I don't really plan on getting any SBR's any time soon.

I'm still waiting to see if suppressors become standard FFL items and I'm hoping if they do that SBR's will follow.

The blast chamber at the end of the muzzle prevents the pressure curve from falling off as quickly as it otherwise would. People typically refer to this as increasing back pressure.
What it translates to in reality is that higher pressure gas charges the system for longer. Suppressed guns run dirtier and eject more fouling out of the chamber upon case extraction because of this, and DI rifles have more fouling run through the carrier for the aforementioned reason.

It increases duration not pressure. A shorter length Gass tube is the only way to increase pressure. The Supressors only behave like increased barrel length as far as the gas systen behaves

The result of the pressure curve being altered is that the average pressure over the duration of the system being charged is higher. It does not fall as rapidly.
Peak pressure is the same. Average pressure over time is higher.
